A friend let her race his vintage Maserati then a tire company asked her to become their female race car driver

Her racing career began almost by chance when a friend invited her to drive one of his two vintage Osca Maseratis near Lime Rock. What started as racing for fun quickly brought magazine attention, and she says their publicity even helped fuel the growing vintage racing movement of the era. Another major turning point came during a media dinner when someone suggested to Dunlop that the company needed a female race car driver, with her sitting right there at the table. Dunlop accepted the proposal, forcing her to attend SCCA driving school and earn a proper racing license before competing professionally. She later raced a Volkswagen Scirocco, crashed it at Bridgehampton while learning front-wheel drive, switched to a Chevrolet Monza, and competed in showroom stock racing. Looking back, she describes an era filled with manufacturer rivalries, major personalities and constant opportunity, while noting that she managed to build an entire racing career without ever actually owning one of the race cars she competed in.
