INSIDE KELLIE HARRINGTON’S RARELY-SEEN FAMILY LIFE WITH WIFE MANDY

Champion boxer Kellie Harrington is known across the world for her skills inside the boxing ring, her pride in her home city, Dublin, especially the inner city where she grew up, and her love of family and her two adored dogs.

But outside of sport, just who is the young woman who has represented Ireland so well on the world stage, what makes her happy, and what has the life she has led so far taught her about being a female athlete in a sport dominated by men?

Kellie Anne Harrington was born on December 11 1989, in Dublin and grew up in the inner city, where, as she says herself, she was a 14-year-old girl just hanging around on the street with her friends, when she noticed there were a lot of boxing clubs springing up in the area.

She used to see people going to training and thought she might give it a go, for something to do.

However, it wasn’t all that easy, as every club she approached said they didn’t take girls because they didn’t have the facilities for girls.

Determined to box, Kellie persisted until one club, St Matthew’s in Irishtown, took her on and allowed her to train.

It was there that she began training seriously, developing the skills and discipline that would later see her rise through the ranks of Irish and international amateur boxing. The club has a strong reputation for nurturing young talent and has produced several notable boxers over the years.

In 2016, Kellie emerged on the international scene with a silver medal at the 2016 World Championships and went on to win gold at the 2018 World Championships, followed by further success at the European Games and European Championships.

Kellie is probably best known for her Olympic successes. She won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and then followed it up with another Olympic gold at the Paris 2024 Games, making her the first Irish boxer, and first Irish woman, to win back‑to‑back Olympic titles.

These historic achievements have made her one of Ireland’s most successful Olympians ever. She has also been recognised with major awards and honours at home, reflecting her impact both in sport and in the community.

Kellie Harrington is admired not just for her skill in the ring but for her determination, resilience and positive influence as a role model for young athletes across Ireland.

But who is this enigmatic young woman when she is not training or competing on the world stage?

Kellie lives a quiet life outside of boxing and has been married to Mandy Loughlin since 2022, after the pair met through the sport when they were both training at the same club in Bray back in 2009. They married in April 2022 in an intimate ceremony in Dublin, with friends, family and their much-loved dogs present at the celebration.

Kellie and Mandy share a home in Dublin with Nidge, a French bulldog, and Maisie, a Staffordshire bull terrier. The couple often feature the pups in social posts, and the dogs even appeared and were playfully represented on the cake at their wedding.

Mandy tends to keep a lower public profile than Kellie, but she is often mentioned in interviews as a constant support, especially during major competitions and Olympic campaigns. She is known for her warm personality and for being a steadfast partner behind the scenes of Kellie’s high-profile boxing career.

Between training sessions, competitions, and public appearances, their home life is a mix of love, fun, and the kind of family moments that keep the Olympic champion grounded.

Kellie and Mandy, Nidge and Maisie lead a quiet but active life, with the two dogs needing a couple of walks a day to keep them happy.

Kellie’s parents and her siblings have also been a constant presence throughout her boxing career, and they played a visible role in her Olympic triumphs. Her parents, Yvonne and Christy Harrington, were famously emotional when Kellie won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and again at Paris 2024, often appearing in broadcast footage cheering her on from the stands or celebrating at home.

Her three brothers, Christopher, Aaron, and Joel, have also supported her career, attending national and international competitions when possible and celebrating her victories alongside the rest of the family. Kellie has often spoken in interviews about how her family’s encouragement, humour, and grounding presence helped her stay focused under the immense pressure of competing on the world stage.

Kellie is also an official ambassador for animal welfare, particularly with the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA). She works with the charity to raise awareness and support for animals in need, has adopted and fostered animals from their shelter, and helps promote events and fundraising efforts for the organisation.

Her involvement includes public campaigns like the DSPCA’s Christmas fundraising appeal and dog-focused events such as Pups in the Park, where she uses her profile to highlight the importance of animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
